Confidentiality & PrivacyGenerally speaking, the law protects the confidentiality of all client/psychotherapist communications. No information can be disclosed without prior written permission from the client. However there are some exceptions required by law to this rule:
- Suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse. I am required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
- If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, I must notify the police.
- If a client intends to harm himself or herself, I will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in ensuring their safety. If they do not cooperate, additional measures may be required (without their permission) to ensure their safety.
